Choosing a class for your child

  • Check the age group. Most gyms split kids' classes by age, so make sure there's a class for your child's age, not just "kids".
  • Book a trial first. Watching or joining one class shows you the coaching, the pace and whether your child enjoys it.
  • Ask about safeguarding. Ask whether coaches working with children are DBS checked and how the club handles first aid.
  • Ask what contact there is. Find out when, and whether, children spar, and what protective kit they need.
  • Ask about the cost. Check the monthly fee, any joining or licence fee, and the cost of a uniform or gloves.

Kids' martial arts: common questions

What age can children start martial arts?

Of the 424 gyms that list ages, the youngest start at 2, and the most common starting age is 4. Classes are usually split by age, for example little ones, juniors and teens.

How much do kids' martial arts classes cost?

226 gyms publish a monthly kids' price: from £10 to £210, and £44 in the middle. The other 486 don't publish one, so ask when you book a trial.

Can my child try a class for free?

338 of the 712 gyms with kids' classes offer a free trial. Gym pages show the trial details from the gym's own website.

Which martial art is best for a child?

It depends on your child. BJJ has no punches or kicks, which some parents prefer for younger children. Boxing, kickboxing and Muay Thai build fitness and coordination through pad work. A free trial is the easiest way to see whether they enjoy it.
